Load, not height, is what separates the two. Ball-stop and court fencing carries far more load than a boundary run, and undersized posts at boundary spacings will lean — not immediately, which is the problem, but over a couple of seasons of use. Post size and spacing are the first decision, and they follow from what the fence is containing and how exposed the ground is.
Tension is a specification, not a technique. Tension wires top, bottom and mid-height, strained to specification rather than pulled by hand and clipped off. Mesh that bags out has usually not failed — it was never properly strained in the first place. On a court that shows up as a fence a ball can push through the line of, and on a ball-stop run it shows up as a fence that stops catching balls at the height it was built for.
The detailing at player height matters as much as the structure. Mesh aperture gets matched to the sport — smaller for tennis and cricket, standard diamond where the fence is containing players and spectators rather than balls. Selvedge gets knuckled where players make contact with the fence, so there is no sharp edge at hand and shoulder height. Gates swing clear of the playing surface and latch positively so they do not drift open mid-game. None of that is expensive; all of it is obvious when it has been left out.
The standards are named so you can ask for the right one. The AS 1725 series has five parts, titled for security fences and gates, commercial tennis court fencing, private and residential tennis court fencing, cricket net fencing enclosures, and sports ground fencing. AS 2423-2002, 'Coated steel wire fencing products for terrestrial, aquatic and general use', covers the chain-link fabric itself together with its zinc, zinc/aluminium-alloy and plastic coatings. We name them so you know which one to ask a contractor about; we do not quote from them, and nothing here is sold as compliant with one.
